In the spring of 2004, a competition was held to find artists to paint murals on Utility Boxes in downtown Palo Alto. More than 20 artists submitted proposals and 10 were selected. The utility boxes are located on Lytton, University, and Hamilton Avenues (
See map for exact locations). The artists who created the murals are: Kiel Brennan-Marquez, Kate Orrange, John Betts, Ceevah Sobel, Susan Hemmenway, Xochitl Kuriger, Cristina Strassman, Hyun-Jin Yoo, Chelsea Hodge, Alison Hoyt*, Larkin Elderon*, and Katie Morton*. The were commissioned by the Public Art Commission and funded by City of Palo Alto Utilities and the City of Palo Alto.
