Palo Alto artist MARTA THOMA created "Go Mama" in 1999. The 6' bronze sculpture is the artist's version of a Mexican doll and the text on its pedestal is written in Spanish, as well as English. Observers ponder why a girl's face can be found in the doll's belly. Is that why this work is so mysterious and provocative? Marta Thoma’s work can be seen on the wall of the City of Palo Alto Utilities station on Alma Street. Her work has also been shown in galleries and museums internationally. “Go Mama” was commissioned by the Public Art Commission and funded by
California Avenue Area Development Association (
CAADA), City of Palo Alto, and private contributions.
